Simon's first venture outside the theatre was as a marionette operator on the Jim Henson film Labyrinth, featuring David Bowie and a host of goblins. Since then he has worked various supporting roles on Muppet movies as well as being part of the animatronic team controlling the one and a half ton robot in Lost in Space. On The Bear he worked in the Italian Alps for three months mixing realistic bear puppets with live grizzly bears. He was puppetry co-ordinator for the John Henderson movie Tales of the Riverbank in which he also performed Hammy the Hamster to the voice of Ardal O'Hanlon.

In September 2021 Simon was invited to work on the Wes Anderson movie Asteroid City (released 2023) and puppeteered a small roadrunner, beautifully made by Andy Gent. Its main starring moment is in the credits, where this tiny puppet performs a dance routine on the largest outdoor set built since Ben Hur!
